The Healthy College Cookbook Alexandra Nimetz Jason Stanley Emeline Starr Rachel Holcomb 0037038420302 Books Reviews
- The authors claim that it's quick, cheap, and easy. It's only the third. Many of the recipes require multiple items that the average college student does not ordinarily stock. It's not quick if many recipes require pre-heating an oven and then baking the food for an hour.
- Pretty good cookbook, but has no photos for inspiration and some recipes are pretty extravagant for a college student.
- This book is what I've been looking for in a cookbook for a long time. It's hard to find cook books that really simplify things and make recipes as quick and easy as this book does. As someone who is easily intimidated by cooking nightly meals, this has really helped. I'd recommend it not just to college students but to anyone living on their own or who wants simple, straight forward recipes to cook.
- I have been looking for a cookbook like this for some time. I am a grad student without much time or money. This book had some helpful idea for foods that I need to keep in my kitchen, and some simple recipes. The trouble with being a student is that it is very easy to fall into the habit of just grabbing fast food on a regular basis, but that will end up costing you more in the end money and health. The down side of this book is that there are no pictures, and some of the recipes are actually quite complex. I was also hoping for more easy crock pot meals. While not perfect, I found this book to pretty helpful for a single graduate student with very little time and on a tight budget.
- Got it for my Grand Daughter as her room mate said she could not boil water yet. My Grand Daughter can make spaghetti so with a cookbook maybe they will not starve. At least if they cannot cook it they can read about it and get inspired to learn yet another one of life's lessons. Beginners get to be great cooks by practice, practice, practice.
- Not worth it. I ended up bookmarking only 8 of the 300 recipes, and didn't want to pay the return shipping fee - would only have gotten $4 refund if I had sent back. Not worth the money. Also requires way more kitchen utensils and hardware than a college student needs.
- This is designed for a beginning cook and so, quite sensibly begins with some basic advice on stocking a kitchen with equipment and staples. Cooking terms are explained and safety information is also given.
The recipes are clearly written (prep time is not given but it would be difficult for the authors to estimate how long it would take a beginning cook) and cover a nice range of difficulty and interests. I particularly liked that vegetarian recipes were included and that all recipes had nutrition information listed, both necessities for a (sometime) vegetarian who is usually on a diet.
I bought this for my college student daughter in hopes of inspiring her to cook for herself, at least part of the time, instead of eating out. For others who are thinking about this as a gift for a student I would suggest adding some of the basic equipment or staples needed. - This is a good cookbook for beginners that has a pretty wide variety of recipies in it. It's got recipies for soups, meat, salads, pastas, desserts and more. Of course, if you're a very picky eater that only eats a few different things that means that many of the recipies will be useless to you, and you'll probably need a more specific cookbook (or more open pallette.) The recipies are generally easy to follow with a good glossary of cooking terms.
The only big thing missing is an estimated time for all dishes. There is a symbol that appears if a recipie is "quick" but otherwise without going through and reading every recipie I won't know if it'll take a half hour or an hour and a half. A couple of the recipies didn't turn out very good but some turned out amazing, like the Presto Chicken Pasta, but you can generally look at the ingredients going into a dish and tell whether it's going to be bland or not. I had nearly no cooking experience when I got this book and it's helped me a lot, so I recommend it to anyone in my position, but if you're already a good cook you'll probably find the majority of the recipies exceptionally easy.
