Difficult emotions like anger, fear, sadness, guilt, and shame are part of being alive and are meant to help protect us, but when they get out of control, these emotions can also cause severe pain. When you're in the grip of an emotional storm, it's all too easy to overreact, lash out at others, or become angry with yourself. Therapists created dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, to help people with overwhelming emotions calm themselves when their feelings become too painful or out of control.
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Diary presents an overview of each of the four DBT skills-distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness-and includes a journal you can use each day to monitor your successes, chart your progress, and stay on track making productive changes in your life.
With this diary, you can
•Observe and record your progress each day
•Find out which coping strategies work best for you
•Discover nutrition and lifestyle changes that can make you feel better

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Diary Monitoring Your Emotional Regulation Day by Day Matthew McKay Jeffrey Wood 9781572249561 Books Reviews
- This book is best for someone who has already participated in a DBT skills program or who has read the workbook by Matthew McKay. It provides great reminders and helps keep skills fresh, but it is not for the beginner who will need more to grasp DBT concepts. The journal is excellent. While there are many on-line options available, I personally find that this method of recording requires me to think more and gain better insight. An excellent book.
- As someone who has PTSD and Chronic Depression, this diary was a wonderful and healthy way to vent what I was feeling in my moments of weakness. Great to use on a day by day basis as well as a spectacular educational way of using this book to its fullest potential. I highly recommend it along with the purchase of 'The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook Practical DBT Exercises for Learning Mindfulness, etc'. The two go hand in hand with one another, great use for personal homework on yourself!
- For content, I would have given this five stars. It very concisely explains through the four elements of Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness) and gives lots of practical tips and applications. It doesn't go into a lot of detail on the theories behind the therapy, but that is great for me because I have trouble focusing on reading and if the book were any longer, I probably wouldn't have read the whole thing.
The diary portion is very helpful for monitoring and recording your use of the four strategies on a daily basis. HOWEVER, this is the main problem with the edition it contains a low-resolution image of the diary worksheet at the end of the book, and there is no way to print it. It is high enough resolution that you can read the words on the worksheet when you zoom in, but not high enough resolution that you would want to print it, even if there were an easy way to copy and paste or print the image (which there isn't).
I realize the authors and do not want people to steal their worksheet and mass produce it, but for consumers that simply want to read the edition of this book and then print off the worksheet for their own personal use, there should be an easier way to do it; otherwise, the diary portion of this book is pretty much useless for readers. - This book is amazing it has truely helped me. I began seeing changes in myself just after reading the first chapter. The book really breaks things down and its really simple to understand annd follow. It has given me lots of AH HA moments. Before this book I was a hot mess. Everyone has there ups and downs but it seemed to me I was always down, angry, and frustrated. I was taking it out on other becase I didn't know how to let my feelings out. I would always bottle things in until I had nervous breakdowns and crying attacks. This book has helped me better understand myself and has given me the ability to express myself. I'm happier, healthier, and I've actually gotten closer to my family because I was able to explain to them better what I was feeling and why. This book will not work for you if you aren't ready to be completely honest with yourself. If you are ready to do something this is the book for you. In life there are always ups and downs...this book just teaches you how to deal with them better.
- For someone who likes to write and journal, I wasn't to keen to the set-up of the DBT diary cards themselves. So when I found this gem which has a whole intro section on the four modules of DBT (for review when needed) and then the rest of the book has a years worth of a Diary Card Journal section-this was perfect. This is wonderful to carry with you so you can check off a skill when you use it as well as review any of the modules if you need it. I recommend it highly!
- This is a great diary for anyone in a DBT program. It is very basic- to be honest, you could probably print similar sheets from the internet for free- but there is something soothing and official about having it in a book form to look back on later. I wish it didn't mention DBT or emotional regulation on the front. "Journal" would suffice.
- I found the book a little bit too simplistic and flimsy regarding some of the aspects of dialectical behavioral training . A good book for somebody who does not have any experience with DBT.
- We have introduced this diary to our "advanced" DBT group -- those who completed 15 weeks of skills training. Some used the big workbook during their training, while others used Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life. All were taught using Marsha Linehan's handouts and procedures.
Clients like the succinct diary card and explanations (review) of skills.
Some say they would like more space to journal, and a way to track feeling states. We have encouraged them to keep a separate journal for these purposes -- or use an "old style" diary card in addition to the book.
It's a good size -- easy to slip into a purse or tote, so people can keep it handy without screaming to the outside world, "I'm an emotionally dysregulated Borderline!"
