Shortlisted for Scottish Crime Novel of the Year
In Thin Air, featuring Ann Cleeves' beloved Inspector Jimmy Perez, a group of old university friends leave the bright lights of London and travel to Shetland to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends. But, one of them, Eleanor, disappears--apparently into thin air.
Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen the ghost of a local child who drowned in the 1920s. Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's disappearance than they first thought. Is there a secret that lies behind the myth? One so shocking that someone would kill--many years later--to protect?
Ann Cleeves is also the author of the Vera Stanhope series. Vera, the television show based on the Vera Stanhope series and available on Netflix, is now filming its fifth season. The Shetland Island TV series is currently being shown to critical acclaim by the BBC, and is airing on select PBS stations in the U.S.

"I love Ann Cleeves`s book, but the conclusion of this serial was implausible, and disappointing. This was the weakest plot so far, although the atmospherics and the main characters were interesting as usual. I was intrigued enough to stay up very late to learn the identity of the murderer, but the denouement was so unbelievable that I retired completely unsatisfied. I am looking forward to the seventh installment, and I hope it will have a more plausible solution. Jimmy Perez and Sandy Wilson are full-fleshed characters, and Ms. Cleeves depicts the Shetland Islands as remote, harsh and addictive, as are her books."

Thin Air A Shetland Mystery Shetland Island Mysteries Ann Cleeves 9781250091079 Books Reviews
- Loved the "Shetland" TV series on Netflix, so it was fascinating to read one of Cleeves' books, upon which the series was based, Though haven't viewed the TV version of "Thin Air" (perhaps there was none, at least to date), it was fascinating to see how her books inspire the series. I found the TV series rich with the visual detail and auditory ambience of the Shetland Islands -- the sea, the cliffs, the mercurial weather patterns, etc. Cleeves skillfully provides the basic structure of the plot and the uniqueness of the characters, the TV series ably fills in the detail that few books can hope to capture -- that's the job of the competent camera and sound work, lush natural backdrops and outstanding acting talent. If you have the opportunity, read one of her "Shetland Mysteries" and view the TV series that she inspired.

- I am a native of the Orkney Islands, so Shetland is very familiar and dear to me. I liked Anne Cleeves' original quartet of Shetland novels- they represented some of what I know of the northern isles of Scotland, but I think she has milked this cow dry with her later novels on this theme. I do not get any feeling for the real Shetland in this novel, the remote but friendly, upbeat community I know it to be. She focuses too much on incomers, mostly English, not native Shetlanders, perhaps because murder and mayhem are so foreign to the character of this community. So does that mean that the incomers are bringing death and destruction to Shetland? Anne Cleeves makes it appear so. And if they are indeed destroying the peace and stability of Shetland, could they please stay at home in England?
- I have really enjoyed all of the works in Ann Cleeves's Shetland series. She has a wonderful way, I think, of painting characters so they are flawed but still likeable, so experiencing her books is for me similar to experiencing real relationships. I truly like atmospheric works and have found myself transported by the Shetland novels although I'm a little on the fence as to whether I actually want to visit the area or not. The reason I did not give the full five stars is that I felt the wrap up was a little disappointing and rushed. There is a great mysterious build up, such that I did not find the resolution predictable, but some of the pieces did not fit together as neatly as I would like, in part because there is a good deal of 'off camera' action relevant to the resolution. I had the edition and found no issues as are reported sometimes for e books. I get a sense of possible new romance in Jimmy Perez's life and appreciate the slow pace of the build up through more than one book; I also particularly appreciate that the characters' personal lives flavor but do not overshadow the mystery part of the story, which is, after all, what I read mysteries for.
- I pounced on Thin Air as soon as it was available! I had the good fortune to meet Ms.Cleeves at a Bouchercon in Baltimore some years ago. She was so personable, engaging and down-to-earth, that I put her books on my "read list." The Shetland Island series has been a real favorite on several fronts - the characters are interesting and have changed over the books, as they should; the locale is just so compelling that I feel as though I've visited; the stories are intricately crafted and are complicated by character's personal dynamics. So, Ms. Cleeves, to me, writes much more than mystery stories. They are psychological fiction, police procedurals, international crime fiction; whatever label you choose to give her books, they are a terrific read. Jimmy Perez is back, of course, as are Willow and Sandy. Each main character and those specific to this tale are made vivid through their actions and dialogue rather than the author's literal description which I find appealing. Whatever murders occur do so "off screen" so to speak; it's not the event but the aftermath that builds the tension and interest in her stories. Thin Air has an added eeriness to it, tying a folk tale to current events. The mists, the landscape, the remoteness, all add to a great new addition to the series. Start at the beginning of the series for the best reading experience.
- This is my first Cleeves book, so I can't say how it compares to her other work. But if Thin Air is any indication, Ms. Cleeves writes pretty subtle "mysteries" where people die, but the violence is muted and not emphasized at all. And, in this case, the murderer was present in most of the story, but was "ordinary" enough to not be an obvious suspect. And the story ended more with a whimper than with a bang - which would also describe how the hinted-at "sexual" tension between the two primary investigators was (or wasn't) resolved at story's end. I can't say the story was unsatisfying - it was, ultimately, somewhat interesting, especially being situated in the Shetlands, a place which doesn't otherwise attract a lot of attention.
Will I read another Cleeves book? Probably, but it will have to come with overwhelmingly positive reviews.
