Dr. Shaw's, Things to Consider Before Calling Yourself a Christian, offers a critical examination of the historical origins of the Christian Church and insightful analyses of doctrine and metaphysical precepts embraced by the Christian faith. As noted by Shaw, factually unsupported faith-based beliefs form the basis of all religions, including Christianity. This short book provides the reader with a well researched foundation from which to pursue his or her own inquiry into the history of Christianity, as well as focusing discussions for personal introspection. Lighthearted quotations, anecdotes and commentary provide humorous interludes throughout the text.

"Dr. Shaw gently explores the obvious and not so obvious flaws in Christian dogma, while not offending the reader in any way. One admires his use of reason, as a scientist, to question the very foundations of Christianity and for that matter of virtually all religious belief. The writing is immediately clear to the layman with no use of academic verbiage to confuse his thesis: that Christianity just doesn't have any compelling evidence to support its tenets. Furthermore, he points out how the very foundations of Christianity have been subject to considerable interpretation over the centuries, such that the modern Christian of today would scarcely recognize the Christian of a thousand years ago. Bravo to Dr Shaw on exploring a controversial issue with patience, reason and good humor. I await his next book with anticipation!"

  • This well-researched book is an excellent source of information and also an enjoyable read. Highly recommend.
  • I am very impressed with the approach taken by Dr. Shaw in his immensely enjoyable and well written book
Things to Consider Before Calling Yourself a Christian. For starters- this book is both easy to read, and easy to understand. This was not written by a religious scholar which spares the reader a pile of historical jargon that is both unhelpful and not necessary to the subject at hand. The book reads like a well produced episode from the History Channel. It wakes you right up, challenges the reader to think for themselves, and most importantly this book is most convincing. The tone is not offensive but does challenge the reader to consider the historical truths before jumping into the quagmire of faith without good reasons. One of the best books I have read this year!

  • This is a wonderful book for people who want to think deeply about the history of Christianity and what that history means for individual faith and spirituality. It is written clearly and even-handedly, and proceeds at a brisk pace. The exploration of the evolution of Christianity over two millennia is absolutely fascinating. The book raises profound questions about the relationship between the religious and the secular. George R. Goethals, Ph.D.
