- This book is easy to read and is full of helpful tips. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that it is for people with PHYSICAL disabilities, who often have very different needs than people with learning types of disabilities. Thanks so much for the tips. We are definitely checking out some of the colleges flagged in the book.
- This is an excellent resource for high school students and parents who are seeking post secondary educational settings for those who have significant physical disabilities. I highly recommend this book.

- There is a lot of important information in easy to read material explained in detail at the begining of this book.
A detailed plan preparing prospective college students for a transition to the necessary self-advocacy (if they are not already doing it) is even provided in the text. This material is not just useful reading for people specifically with physical disabilities. It is also useful for any prospective college student with a disability--regardless of disability. Their family also could benefit from the text, it explains what role they can take during the transition process in high school, and how this role ends at college.
But all of this GREAT work gets undercut with unecessary blurbs about 'disability friendly' colleges.
Seemingly forgetting their own earlier material about legal rights/responsibilities and self-advocacy, the author tries to convince the newly-minted self advocates that they will only be able to consider certain colleges around the country if they have disabilities. They even forget that these colleges don't provide personal attendants for care, and the student would have to work with vocational rehabilitation for necessary personal care services.
It then felt like a different book--or two texts were melded together. I did not know what they were trying to prove. Colleges covered by ADA/504 don't have an option if they want to be 'friendly' to a paying student. They do have certain laws which they have to follow. And these laws can't do the same thing as special education.
I hope that a future edition excises the confusing information about colleges. Go back to the legal social information. Keep it clear for the audiences. - Wow! This book is the most powerful source of support and knowledge for the disabled who are looking at a way to gain higher education that I have ever seen. I have had to deal with wheelchairs and those who have mobility issues and it is important to have a source like this to make survival not only easier but even fun. This book is stuffed full of information dealing with the critical issues of surviving college including not just the obvious disabled in wheelchairs but those with learning disabilities and hidden illnesses; even terminal diseases. Campus life will be different for the handicapped but the right college will limit that difference and Chris Tiedemann has done all the research to tell you who those colleges are and your rights, laws, forms etc. She packs this "survival manual" full of issues you would never even thing about. For instance issues such as obtaining and maintaining "accommodations" offered the disabled and how to understand and manage those accommodations; understanding your rights and laws. She also includes more than academic support; you'll find what is important in nonacademic support services so critical to a successful college experience. Let Chris guide you through college survival skills whether you are 18 or 38 or more. Learn what programs are out there for you and what colleges will make your education a really "wonderful" experience. She will bridge that information gap and get you started right. This is the most powerful aid for a success full college experience the physical disabled can buy. This is for those who didn't know who to ask. Frank L. - College Success for Students with Physical Disabilities is a great book for anyone with a disability that would like to attend college. Tiedemann offers tips for students beginning with the steps to take while the student is still in high school. The book emphasizes that the family begins planning while the student is in the teen years, and encourages the student to become a self-advocate. Four students offer their own experiences in college planning and attending their college.
I wish I had had a handbook like this while I was a student in college. What a great reference for students with disabilities!
